A piece of art. This novel is a 340 pages of beautiful prose. The God of Small Things tells the story of an extended Indian family but effectively goes beyond the Indian nationality and borders. It’s a story about a forbidden love in a politically charged India told through the eyes of a young twins (Estha and Rahel).

The God of Small Things introduces an unusual English that is creative yet speaks to the heart and mind of everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re Muslim or Christian, Asian or American, male of female, child or adult, the small details of Estha and Rahel’s seemingly simple daily life will hypnotize you.

The human aspect of this novel is intense and the vocabulary is brilliant; you could almost see the half-moons under the child’s eyes or feel how cold a lemon juice was. Roy played with the words, making them dance back and forth while narrating a tragic story backwards. Sometimes she repeated things, small things, and it seemed as though she was on a roller-coaster of thoughts and it just happened that she had a pen in her hand so she wrote everything down. Every single small thing.
